Dianne, when I first went to Germany looking for ancestors of Sue's, the
church records in Speyer were open just a day or two. I found a card with very
faint writing that i thought said Matheis Britzius came from "karnten" which I
took to be maybe Carinthia. My daughter and I even drove down there and looked
through phone books. I thought "ktern" might be another interpretation,
meaning from Kaiserslautern. Later someone discovered he was from Soetern, a town
between Waldgrehweiler/Bisterschied and Trier. A souterrain in French is a
tunnel, and the town has deep tunnels underneath it though noboby now knows
why. My present theory is that the family descended from a Roman soldier who
retired in Trier. There is a rock I learned about in geology class called
"brescia'" that is mottled and I think igneous--anyway, an old type rock mountains
are made of. It's found in northern Italy in a place called Brescia, which in
turn is named for an ancient tribe called the Brescii. The first notes I
found for Britzius families said they came from Bjern or Beiern, which I finally
realized meant "Bayern", the German word for Bavaria The old "y" was a
strange letter written kind of like a "j" with a dot, or just an "i." Finally
someone sent me a copy of a family bible page that named Bisterschied. That led to
lots of information stored in Rockenhausen and other places. We loved your writeup about your Dad--
you're a great writer. Regards, Bill

Britzius File II p. 7 "Matthais Pritzius, a decorative gardener living in Bisterschied, died on the 30th of December 1766, and was buried on New Years Day of the following year, 1767. His age unknown - about 65 years - but his birthday is believed to have been on the 4th of August."

1850 Census shows Elizabeth with 6 children, no husband. Youngest, Edward, is 3 yrs old.
Elizabeth married Richard Kayhart in 1824 and they had six children. Sons Hiram and Charles both fought for the union in the Civil War. Other children were Wilbur, Emaline, Margaret, and Edward.
Richard is probably a brother to Malinda Kayhart who married Elizabeth's brother Frederick.
[341] Elizabeth's husband is not present in this census.

Edward, the next to the youngest in this family of eight children is the only one now living.
For many years he lived in Watsonville, California where he was the operator of a creamery of which he
owned half interest. When Uncle Henry first came to California, he made his home with this son until the
death of his wife. Some years later when ill health began to trouble Edward a bit, he sold his interest in
the creamery and moved to Vallejo, where he took a job with the government. Then because of his age he
gave up his government job and became the caretaker of the Presbyterian Church of which they were
members. Later on account of failing health they moved to Cloverdale, California. They bought a nice
home there and are living there now. Of late, he is an invalid, suffering from a stroke which was brought
on by a fall. It has affected his ability to talk and move about. It makes one feel sorry to see him carry
this kind of a cross, but he never complains about anything and just makes the best of it. He has two
daughters.
