When Henry II married Eleanor he acquired Normandy and Aquitaine, together amounting to half of modern France.
He was the first Plantagenet King, the name acquired through his father.
He ruled as King of England 1154 to 1189.
Henry's greatest contribution to English culture was the development of courts and trials which moved the country on a path away from trial by ordeal and toward trial by law.
Henry is also remembered for the murder of his good friend and antagonist Thomas a Becket. Henry believed the king was more powerful than the church. Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, said the church was more powerful than the king. Some of King Henry's men murdered Thomas in his church in 1170.
